| 05:55 pm Well, great. We broke GJ.
I've backed up this journal and jonstewartfans. Anonymous commenting is disabled, because I've been getting lots of spam. (I guess the filters are broken too.)
All interesting updates from this point on will be on my blog (WordPress). If you're still on LJ, you can put it on your flist.
Peace out.

| 05:52 pm - Hello website. FireFTP has decided to stop uploading images properly. What gives?
I got creative and downloaded another FTP program to get today's comic up, as well as the images for a couple of website updates:
All of my art, fic, and vids for miscellaneous fandoms (i.e. not Hellsing or the fake newsverse) can now be found here.
Plus, all my fake news vids are finally collected on one page. (Of course, Badongo (my host for large files) is also having issues, so I've had to be creative again just to get all the download links. Sigh.)
Finally, there's a nice webpage for taking commissions, instead of a journal entry.
Three "under construction" pages down, umpteen to go!

| 07:22 pm Made it safely home, and then, in a long and strenuous journey very exciting traveling adventure, to the family in England. Time to deal with some tabs that have been around for weeks.
Apparently Kerry and Edwards couldn't work together. At all. Subtle arguments added up. Why oh why can't the Republicans have this kind of problem, instead of marching in scary fundamentalist lockstep?
A small amount of denial is psychologically necessary for a functioning society. (Well, we knew that. "Of course I don't hate your new haircut!") Take it to excess, and it gets scary.
This video was made in 2002; how have I been on the Internet since then and not seen it yet? For anyone who has ever gotten an email forward.
...and that's actually all I got right now.
How 'bout that.
...edit: one more thing! This user has a six-part interview/profile of Douglas Adams. I'm halfway through. It's fascinating. And it goes with the icon. Current Mood: Christmas is in five days?!

| 12:12 pm - DONE. Okay, this is a qualified "done". I still have a few things to take care of before I can pack up and walk out of here tomorrow.
But let's just ignore those, and let me savor my moment here.
I'm done! Current Mood: delighted Current Music: Nox Arcana - Ghosts of Christmas Past

| 10:11 pm - The good, the bad, and the testing HAH.
All ten pages, knocked out!
Turns out what I needed was a change of scenery. There's a room in the science center that only astronomy students can use (it's the one with the computers that are hooked up to the telescopes), so I put my paper and my notes on my flash drive and spent a few hours there. It did the trick.
In journaling news, the icon limit has actually been enforced. I can only use ten. I'm very glad this is one of them, because it would suck to lose my sexy sexy Integra.
Now I just need to finish a Powerpoint presentation, a French exam (which is take-home, but you're not allowed to use notes), and next week's comics. And get through half a dozen library books. And organize. And pack.
But by golly, the paper is done. Current Music: Backstreet Boys - Christmas Time

| 04:27 pm - So angry. Icon limit is all of a sudden at 10.
Bzuh?
The whole reason I came to GJ was to have more icon space than I knew what to do with, and all of a sudden it has less than my LJ account.
It looks like I can still use all 82 that I have uploaded, but I can't add more. Which means no new Christmas icons.
In other news, six pages to go. Current Mood: angry Current Music: George Winston - The Holly and the Ivy

| 02:20 am - Sleep now maybe? Slept from half past seven to half past eleven. This is really not a good time for a long nap. (Am feeling like Timothy at the moment. Perhaps that strip was subconscious foreshadowing?)
Have been working on that paper.
Could write more, but will attempt to sleep now, in effort to get back on something approximating a normal schedule.
Eight pages to go. Current Music: Josh Groban - Believe Reading: Choctaw Tales Phillip Martin/Tom Mould 2004

| 05:33 pm - Stocking stuffers! There is depressing news today. For the moment, I'm ignoring it. It's celebration time.
The Left Behind books are nicely deconstructed as Bible fanfiction - which is probably the sense in which I enjoy them (at least, the few that I've read).
You've heard "The 12 Pains of Christmas"? If not, check out the Disney version anyway; added lol.
The movie of The Golden Compass gets a potentially promising review. Most heartening to me: the director is a fan. (I need to reread those books.)
Translate the 3rd-century text found last year in one way, and it says Judas was a hero. Translate it another, and it literally calls him a demon. This editorial is worth reading simply to find out how such completely different readings could happen, but the religious angle adds a level of cool.
(I've always thought Judas should be in Heaven. By the logic of Christianity, his betrayal was necessary for the death and all-important Resurrection. If he hadn't done it, someone else would have had to.)
A touch of news from my religion: we've shown up on the agenda of the American Academy of Religion's annual meeting. The papers have silly-sounding titles, but they're Serious Academic Research. Go us!
And finally, a charming seasonal fable: It's a Wonderful Internet.
Have a merry weekend, all.

| 11:45 am - Satire, Serbia, and samoas Elizabeth: I keep signing on and you're not there. Plz to be psychically observing when I am online and waking up at that time kthx.
And now, news, of a sort.
Without directly mentioning the WGA strike, the Onion gives a nod to the importance of writers: Perfectly Marketed TV Show Somehow Fails.
More Onion reports: CIA: America May Have An Unknown Number Of Secret Admirers.
Speaking of satire, the Serbs have turned the dark-but-witty one-liner into an art form. Depressing but cool.
I'm eating Girl Scout cookies right now (Samoas and Tagalongs, mmm-mmm), so it seems timely to point to this: scouting gives Muslim girls in America a way to fit in. (I was a Girl Scout for a few years, and I'm not even the scouting type. It definitely helped me be social.)
I'm saving up Christmas links to post next. Not now, though. Now, I need a nap.

| 07:01 pm - Snow! It's snowing!
This never fails to put me in a good mood. Never mind that I haven't been completely awake for days, that my room is way too cold, that I have ten pages to write (yes, it's end-of-semester countdown time again!), or that I haven't done most of my Christmas shopping, or that...
Well, there were a few other things, but I honestly can't remember them now.
It's snowing. Current Mood: enthralled Current Music: Helicon - Carol of the Bells

| 12:24 pm I'm not Christian, but every once in a while I feel the need to use this icon. Now is one of those times.
Ladies, gentlemen, and anyone else who may be reading, we have heat.

| 05:49 pm Have been to the grocery store.
Kraft macaroni and cheese. Just like Mom used to make. And the cooking has brought the temperature in here up five degrees.
And I have Girl Scout cookies.
Things are looking up. Current Mood: hopeful Current Music: Point of Grace - Sleigh Ride

| 02:11 pm - Aaaand home! Got home very late last night, dead tired. Drove through snow, rain, dark, and NYC at rush hour. (I still like driving in general, but I don't recommend any of these.)
Had a fender-bender in the last hour. No major damage and nobody was hurt, but the car now has a new dent.
Found the house with no Internet connection and -- surprise! -- a broken furnace. It's not freezing yet, and I've marshaled together a lot of blankets, and I have obviously fixed the connection by now, and I'm in touch with my parents (who are, as you will recall, in England) over everything.
But I'm listening to Christmas music. Because, darnit, I want the pick-me-up. Current Music: Tchaikovsky - Nutcracker Suite

Must resist temptation to load up Christmas music for the drive home.
Speaking of that drive: I'm heading off now. See you on the flip side.

November 19th, 2007
| 08:45 am Tomorrow I drive home for Thanksgiving. I can stay awake all day when necessary; I just make up for it by sleeping most of the next.
In the meantime, news. There's a better deconstruction of gender re: Bee Movie, and Maureen Dowd notes other gender-related prejudices, such as the way men are only attracted to ambition that doesn't top theirs.
I'm always a little leery of stories about Internet addiction -- after all, I compulsively check my email, and when I can't connect I feel like I'm in withdrawal. But if you're online seventeen hours a day and potentially dropping dead because you don't leave to eat, then it's time to call rehab. (For addiction in general, this whole town has turned into a rehab center, which is pretty cool.)
On the other hand, there's growing recognition for the good side of geekiness. Check this article on online friendships that acknowledges how real, close, and supportive they can be. Or this movie that follows a group of LARPers, but treats them like a sports team (a group of people having legitimate fun together, not a deviant fringe).
And now, your Moment of Zen (i.e. something completely different to round this off): Hispanic surnames are catching up to Anglo ones in U.S. popularity. Best thing about this article: the searchable list of last names. (Mine is down hundreds and hundreds. But it's still cool.)

| 10:25 am - Zen and the Art of Building Walls Everyone reading this has already been to Erin Ptah dot com. (You have, right? Right?)
Time to do it again, especially the fake news fans on my flist. I've started organizing the TDS and TCR content; zen.erinptah.com will now take you to the entry page for Zen and the Art of Building Walls, the future comprehensive hub for all my fic, art, vids, and assorted crossovers.
As with the front page, it's still mostly links to content on LJ and other sites. But you can still admire the cool layout.
(Oh -- and if you poke around long enough, you'll find a certain sneak preview.)

November 10th, 2007
| 01:10 pm - Website! Erin Ptah dot com is now live.
Right now it's just a front page and links to existing content. Oh, but it's a pretty front page.
And, check it out, subdomains! Just look what happens when you hit up Shine dot Erin Ptah dot com.
I was going to get SailorPtah.com, but then I realized that I use the name Erin all the time online, I sign artwork as Erin Ptah, and there's going to be so little Sailor Moon-related content on the site that it makes sense to go for a more general URL.
Now I need to come up with a clever title for the fake-news-related subsection. And, y'know, make that section. It's the only one that isn't already built. There's lots of content online, but scattered in disparate areas -- LJ, DailyMotion, DeviantArt -- that need to be collected together.
DrakNet, the host, is not only cheap and easy to manage, it's -- get this -- carbon-neutral. And it's a relief to have a single hub that I can use as a platform for everything I do. Don't know what else I'm going to do with the space, but I'm glad to have it. Current Mood: rejuvenated

| 12:03 am - On the bright sides Just rearranged the room so that my computer chair is next to the heater that works. So far, the results have been pleasantly warm. (The rearrangement involved stacking books in front of one of the windows, which works now because it's getting too cold to open them. The windows, not the books.)
Research on women in the workplace continues to find that we pretty much can't win. Sigh.
On the bright side, sensationalism in television news actually hurts ratings. Now somebody tell the networks.
On the literal bright side, an article about light pollution and astronomy talks about my astronomy professor. Very cool.
I still have way too many tabs open, but it is late and I have mono. Bedtime. Current Music: The Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called Love
